Summer Fellowships Support Study and Research in Latin America and the Caribbean

Six College of Arts & Letters students have received summer fellowship from the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at Michigan State University to pursue education abroad, language study, or field research in Latin America and the Caribbean during summer 2023.

The following is the list of recipients from the College of Arts & Letters and what they plan to do with the funding.

Undergraduate Endowment Scholarship:

Natalie Harmon, a senior with a double major in Comparative Cultures and Politics in James Madison College and Spanish in the College of Arts & Letters, will study abroad in MSU’s education abroad program in Politics, Culture, and Society in Salvador, Brazil.

Tyler Lindquist, a senior with a double major in Spanish and Arabic, will travel to São Paulo, Brazil, to study intensive Portuguese.

Graduate Summer Research Fellowship:

Kiana Gonzalez-Cedeno, a Ph.D. in English student, will research Bomba in Puerto Rico for her project, titled Entre llantos: Literary and Embodied Representations of Lamentations in Puerto Rican and Boricua Popular Culture

Mayra Flores Mejia, a Ph.D. in Hispanic Cultural Studies student, will conduct archival research in Cusco, Peru, for her project, titled Entre lo sagrado y lo profano: mediació, censura y género. Edición critica de casos de hechicería indigena de los Andes centrales, sigo XVII. 

Ana Patricia Ponce Castañeda, a Ph.D. in Hispanic Cultural Studies student, aims to produce, through her research, a state-of-the-art project on women’s representation in Mexican horror cinema — as heroines, victims, or monsters. Her project is titled Female Representation Throughout the History of Mexican Horror Cinema.

Foreign Language and Areas Studies (FLAS) Fellowship:

Diana Cisneros, a senior Linguistics major, will travel to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, to study K’iche’.  

Tyler Lindquist, a senior with a double major in Spanish and Arabic, also won a FLAS fellowships, which will cover tuition, fees, and subsistence costs for Tulane University’s Summer Intensive Portuguese Program in São Paulo, Brazil.
