In this course, with guidance from Prof. Safoi Babana-Hampton, you will visit a variety of fascinating art collections and galleries, including the:

  • Musée du Quai Branly,
  • Château de Versailles
  • Fondation Clément
  • Musée de l’Histoire de l’Immigration and the
  • Digital Library of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

You will learn to examine these works and read and write about:

  • The important ties between artistic representation of the past and historical writing practices in France.
  • Contemporary artistic responses to the Eurocentric or colonialist gaze of the past.

By the end of the course, you will also curate your own virtual art gallery. Keeping in mind the importance of inclusive representations of the past in contemporary artistic spaces, you will select images or works related to your own specific interests from the virtual art collections and digital images you have seen.
