FRN 440: French Literature in the Jazz Age

SS25 – Mon/Wed: 10:20 AM – 11:40 AM
Advanced Seminar

Step back in time to the 1920s, an era often referred to as the Jazz Age or les années folles (the crazy years), and immerse yourself in the dynamic world of French literature and culture. FRN 440, taught by Prof. Elizabeth Tuttle, invites you to explore a period when Harlem Renaissance writers flocked to Paris, mingled with surrealists, and revolutionized the art scene.

In this advanced seminar, you’ll dive into the exhilaration and artistic experimentation that defined France between the World Wars. Discover how women embraced new freedoms, cutting their hair and demanding the right to vote, while men from France’s colonies who fought in World War I reshaped the country’s identity into a multicultural space. Explore the influence of Jewish immigrants as they created a sense of community in the capital city.

Through literature that captures the energy, political strife, and creative tension of the time, FRN 440 offers a comprehensive look at the vibrant and transformative period of 1920s France. This is the perfect course for students passionate about French literature, culture, and history.
