Announcing the New TROPOS Journal Volume and Launch Party

We are excited to share the release of the latest volume of TROPOS, an interdisciplinary graduate student journal housed in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University. This new edition marks an important milestone, showcasing the hard work and research of graduate student scholars from various disciplines, including literary studies, cultural studies, film and media studies, gender studies, and linguistics.

Join us to celebrate the new issue at the TROPOS Launch Party on October 17, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM in the Wells Hall Atrium. This event is a great opportunity to connect with fellow students and faculty, engage with the research featured in the journal, and learn more about the themes explored in this volume.

First published in 1971, TROPOS is one of the longest-running graduate student-edited journals in Romance Studies in North America. After a brief pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023-2024 editorial board—led by editor-in-chief Vanessa Weller—has worked tirelessly to revitalize the journal. With the help of the Graduate Student Association (GSA), faculty advisor Dr. Gabriela Alfaraz, and the MSU Libraries Publishing Services, this latest edition continues the TROPOS tradition of providing an intellectual space for graduate students to share their research and gain valuable publishing experience.

What’s Inside the Latest Volume?

This edition of TROPOS is divided into four themed sections, each containing three articles that reflect the linguistic and cultural diversity within the field of Romance and Classical Studies. Articles are written in French, Spanish, and English, covering topics from European, Latin American, African, North American, and Asian perspectives.

A special highlight of the new volume is the variety of interdisciplinary research it presents. The articles explore themes like media and appearance, diaspora and identity, feminism and nationalism, and the legacy of trauma and exclusion. The issue reflects the dynamic and cutting-edge academic contributions of early-career scholars, fostering dialogue across cultures and disciplines.
