Degree Requirements
Students interested in completing the major in Spanish should schedule a meeting with the RCS academic advisor.
Requirements for Completion of the Major in Spanish:
- Complete 27 credits of the core requirements
- Complete a minimum of 9 credits in Spanish 400-level electives
- Complete an experiential component
- All of the following courses (27 credits):
- SPN 310 – Basic Spanish Grammar
- SPN 320 – Cultural Readings and Composition (W)
- SPN 330 – Phonetics and Pronunciation
- SPN 342 – Media and Conversation
- SPN 350 – Intro to Reading Hispanic Literature (W)
- SPN 412 – Topics in Hispanic Culture
- SPN 420 – Spain and its Literature
- SPN 432 – Latin America and its Literature
- SPN 440 – The Structure of Spanish
- Three of the following courses (9 credits):
- SPN 452 – Topics in Spanish Language
- SPN 462 – Topics in Spanish Literature
- SPN 472 – Topics in the Literatures of the Americas
- SPN 482 – Topics in Spanish Linguistics
- SPN 491 – Special Topics
- *SPN 452, 462, 472 and 482 may be repeated for up to 9 credits
Total Spanish credits required: 36-40
Experiential Component Options:
Students majoring in Spanish are expected to study abroad for at least eight weeks, but should a student be unable to meet that expectation, one of the following options must be pre-approved:
- Internship for at least eight weeks in a Spanish-speaking environment.
- Service learning for at least eight weeks in a Spanish-speaking environment.
*Any student that cannot complete the required experiential component must enroll in SPN 492 Senior Writing Project for 1 credit.
The College of Arts and Letters cognate requirements must be followed:
- One cognate of 15 credits, with at least 3 credits in the upper division.
- The cognate shall be in a single discipline or thematic area.
*One Linguistics course (LIN 200, LIN 401, ROM 401, ENG 302) and SPN 330 are prerequisites for SPN 440.
*The University’s Tier II writing requirement for the Spanish major is met by completing Spanish 320 and 350.
Note: Students wishing to earn a Spanish Education major must apply separately for admission to the College of Education. Applications are available at the College of Education Student Affairs Office, 134 Erickson Hall. Acceptance into the program is necessary for admission into the required Education courses.
