SPN 310: Basic Spanish Grammar

Fall and Spring | 3 credits

If you’ve been studying Spanish for a while but still find yourself second-guessing whether to use ser or estar, or feel unsure when the subjunctive sneaks into a sentence, SPN 310 is here to help you sort it all out. This course is designed for intermediate learners who want to strengthen their grasp of Spanish grammar and gain confidence in their communication.

In SPN 310, students take a closer look at the most commonly misunderstood areas of Spanish grammar, especially those that tend to challenge English-speaking learners. The class is structured around real examples, interactive practice, and in-depth discussions that make grammar more intuitive and applicable in both writing and conversation.

What You’ll Learn:

  • When and how to use ser vs. estar
  • How to distinguish between preterit and imperfect
  • When to use the subjunctive mood and why it matters
  • Mastery of Spanish pronouns, reflexive verbs, and uses of se
  • Clear guidance on prepositions (por vs. para) and conjunctions

Course Details:

  • Credits: 3
  • Schedule: Offered every Fall and Spring
  • Prerequisite: Not open to students with credit in SPN 150

By the end of SPN 310, you’ll have a stronger, more confident command of Spanish grammar, with a clearer understanding of complex structures like verb tenses, pronouns, and the subjunctive—laying a solid foundation for more accurate and fluent communication in upper-level Spanish courses.
