FRN 350: Connecting with the cultures of the Francosphere

Fall, Spring, and Summer of Every Year | 3 credits

What does it mean to be part of the Francophone world—and how is it connected to your own?
FRN 350 takes you on a cultural journey across continents, exploring the rich heritage and diverse expressions of French-speaking communities in places like the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia.

Through literature, film, media, and multimedia storytelling, you’ll discover how history, identity, and culture intersect in the global Francosphere—and how these stories connect back to the United States in surprising and meaningful ways.

In this course, you’ll:

  • Study cultural and artistic works from a variety of Francophone regions
  • Explore how colonial histories and global movements have shaped shared and differing identities
  • Analyze literature, film, music, and digital media as reflections of cultural experience
  • Trace the connections—past and present—between Francophone cultures and the U.S.

Whether you’re drawn to global issues, cultural studies, or want to deepen your understanding of French-speaking communities beyond Europe, FRN 350 offers a fresh and dynamic perspective.
