The Department of Romance and Classical Studies is pleased to announce Dr. Anthony Grubbs’ new edition of Juan de Benavides’ comedia Vida y muerte de San Cristóbal. This work is one of two known comedias to focus on the saint, who inspired a very popular cult following, such that works centering on him would experience censorship and rewrites under pressure from the Catholic church. As a result, Vida y muerte de San Cristóbal continues to further dialogue about the Catholic Church’s influence and censorship in general.
Dr. Grubbs is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University, and also serves as the department chair. His research interests include Early Modern Spanish literature and culture, hagiography; performance theory, and theater history, and he has previously authored The Playwright’s Perspective: Innovative Dramaturgy and Its Poetics in Early Modern Spain. In addition, his research has been published in many journals, including Bulletin of the Comediantes, Hispanófila, Calíope, Comedia Performance, and Catalan Review.
Dr. Grubbs’ edition of Vida y muerte de San Cristóbal is available from the ACMRS Press.
