SPN 482: Evolution of the Spanish Language

Have you ever wondered why some Spanish speakers say “ustedes” but others say “vosotros”? Why words like “cerveza” are pronounced differently depending on the dialect? Why the “h” is not pronounced in Spanish? Why there are so many irregular verbs in Spanish? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then SPN 482 Fall 2024 is the course for you. In this class, Prof. Adolfo Ausín will guide you through the evolution of the Spanish language and will answers questions like these and others.

The course is organized around two books: The History of Spanish: A Student’s Introduction by Quesada and Ranson, and La maravillosa historia del español by Moreno Fernández.
